Lesson 4: Assessment.

Introduction
This lesson is a chance for you to demonstrate your understanding of what you've covered in this module.

The assessment tasks:

  1. Rules of Photographic Composition
  2. Flatbed scan to specification
  3. Customise an unwrapped texture then re-apply it to a 3D model

If you've submitted all the learning tasks from the previous lessons and received feedback, you should feel confident enough to do the following assessments.


Assessment Task: Rules of Photo Composition (9 hrs.)

 

Introduction
This task tests your ability with a camera to take photos and your understanding of the Rules of Photographic Composition.

Assessment Task: Tell a story | Flatbed Scanner (1-3 hrs.)

Introduction
This Assessment Task tests your understanding of how to operate a flatbed scanner to scan artwork to specification.

Task:

Use your flatbed scanner to tell a story.
You need to gather nine objects that represent your story. Think about what sort of objects do justice to your story and look at it from the perspective of your viewer; it needs to "make sense".

For example, in the composition if you saw a fishhook, a hat, a bloodied hand, a map and a compass it might suggest a fishing trip incident.

Tips:
Obviously you're not going to get a glass of chardonnay under the platten cover so use your common sense and scan objects that aren't too tall (although you'll be surprised exactly what you can get under there!). Use a towel to block out any light otherwise the scan will be under-exposed and too dark.

Specification:
Set your scanner to colour, 200dpi, to capture a reasonable amount of detail (how you set the res. is up to you...consult the help file that came with your scanner software).

Submission Guide
Ensure your final artwork is A4 landscape aspect and saved for the web in Photoshop as a 70 quality jpeg. Submit via email or your preferred cloud storage.

Assessment Task: Customise an unwrapped texture then re-apply it to the 3D model (2-4hrs)

 

Intro:
This task tests your ability with Photoshop to add your own artwork to an unwrapped asset and then re-apply it to a 3D model.

Note: The supplied asset also features a lighting and rendering solution and simplifies the task.

The expectation is you add your own artwork to the unwrapped texture, re-apply it to the model, render it and submit both your .psd file AND the rendered scene as a 80 quality .jpg.

 

Detailed instructions for this task as well as assets are available from our LMS in MS Word format. Assets are in 3DS Max format and .psd.

Submission Guide
Submit the .psd and the final render in a single zip folder via email or your preferred cloud storage.

Summary

This module was a brief introduction to the fundamental skills needed to process and create artwork for digital media. If you've completed all the tasks you should now be able to demonstrate an understanding of how to create backgrounds and textures for several scenarios, in several formats as well as tonally correct, color correct, sharpen, crop and re-size images.
